The Short Story

I'm an entrepreneur for the past 15+ years and location independent.

I'm an investor since 2006. Started with stocks then later on international real estate and in recent years going into crowd investing.

Been building the lifestyle that I always wanted for myself and over the years managed to find the right balance between staying in one place and travel. I go with my family for Workations, where we travel and work for 1-3 months every time.

I have a 4-year old daughter, which my wife and I are currently homeschooling.

Over the years, I realized how much I'm passionate about 3 things. Personal finances, Investments, and travel. Free Financial Self is the natural combination of all these.

It allows me to help others align their lifestyle goals and their finances, especially making people happier.

But to be frank, it took years to put the pieces together. Mentally, financially and even socially.

Travel and finances from an early age

As the son of a travel agent, my parents were always traveling to different destinations. Part of my childhood knowledge back then were capitals of different countries, flags, and even the ability to recognize airline companies by looking at airplanes in the sky. I now teach my daughter the same things.

I also remember that from a young age, the first section I opened in the newspaper was the financial section. And soon, I realized that you can exchange money and make a profit. I started trading USD for ILS and wise versa on the most accessible trading platform I had, my parents!

Fast forward 15 years, I decided to take a leap into the investments world, realizing you can earn more money this way. I took courses about investments in stocks, real estate, and stock options. I then started doing the first steps myself buying and selling shares. I remember how scary that was at the beginning.

Since then, I made many many investments and tried different ways to make money passively.

Becoming location independent & taking workations

Becoming location independent was also something that took time.

I started learning and implementing different internet marketing tactics in 2005-6. It's around the same time I started trading in the stock market. Determined to make some passive income from it too. However, that didn't last very long. But it showed me that money can be made remotely and I managed to do it. That was VERY satisfying.

Over the years, I built many businesses, almost all were entirely online and hence give the ability to manage them remotely.

In 2011 my wife and I decided to move to China. I built one successful company there. When we returned from China back to Israel in 2014, two things happened. I started running my company entirely remotely, as my team was in China. The 2nd thing is that my wife, at the time working for an international Chinese company, started to work for them remotely from Israel.

Basically, we were both location independent.

However, the transition was completed when our daughter was around 1 year old. My wife got a job at a remote-first company. I left the management of my own company and started Free Financial Self.

We were and are financially stable. We were then able to start taking long family trips. We call those workations. We spend several months when we travel. We've been to Thailand, Portugal, USA, Sri Lanka, and Italy. Yes, we can travel indefinitely, but at this stage in life, we prefer to go back to our base and extended families. Then when we have the itch, make another trip.

How do we live?

We live a pretty frugal lifestyle. We don't overspend and find ways to save on things we need or eliminate costs completely when possible.

We don't have a fancy car, because that's doesn't make us happier people.

We don't have a big house (we live in a yurt), because that also does not make us happier. Think of maintenance, cleaning, and taxes.

We manage to save a lot of regular everyday costs because of that way of living in time and money.

I keep optimise our finances. Saving more, investing more and get ourselves familiar with new types of investments. I share all that on my monthly financial updates.

Our daughter is bilingual. We homeschool her, as we find we have the time and energy to do that and give her excellent world education.

Most entrepreneurs are too busy to even think managing their personal finances beyond the day to day, let alone planning for retirement. And yet it's when entrepreneurs are young that they need to start saving and investing, and not just investing in their own startups. Shlomo understands the entrepreneurial mindset and the special challenges entrepreneurs face when it comes to financial planning, and knows how to work with the most challenged of us to create strategies that work.

Even with a degree in finance and relatively frugal spending habits, my financial life was nowhere near ideal as an expat. I had turned 30 a few years back and the pressure of getting serious about my financial future was becoming a heavier burden.

Shlomo helped me get clarity. I considered moving to a new place and needed to know the exact expenses for each of these choices.

Shlomo helped me make a decision and keep my priorities straight. He also helped me untangle my ambition and sort out my needs vs. my desires. Not only was the original planning phase enormously helpful but the follow-up calls helped me bounce back as my situation changed over the months.

My personality always seems to take me down new paths but armed with the two budgets Shlomo and I made together, I was able to keep myself on track and manage my expectations for my disposable income, investments, and my fund to support my continuing travels.
